And that was just the treatment of people. “We had some real problems with the elephants,” Kaplan testified. “I was told [by the circus veterinarian] … that about half of the elephants in each of the shows had tuberculosis and that the tuberculosis was an easily transmitted disease to individuals, to human beings. The circus, the elephants, were transported all throughout Florida, which is illegal to do that in the State of Florida.”

Later, he said, “I was asked by Chuck [Smith], through Kenneth [Feld], to find a physician who would test the people on the circus to see if they had tuberculosis but who would destroy the records and not turn them into the Centers for Disease Control.”

Dear Judge your staff is surfing for porn

Dear Judge xxxxxxxx

I am writing to advise you of a situation in your court that has come to the attention of the Administrative Office. A court computer that has a xxxxxxxxxxxxx court IP address was used to access a significant amount of inappropriate material from several Internet sites. The material, some of which appears to consist of sexually-related movies, was first accessed on Friday, February 9, between 12:12 p.m. and 1:35 p.m. Additional movie files were accessed from this same computer the following Friday, February 16, from 10:53 a.m. until 12:44 p.m. A record of the material accessed is enclosed.

This activity was captured by the judiciary’s security intrusion detection system. The DCN user at your court appeared on the security sensors because of his or her activity in accessing movie (MPG) files. Due to the large capacity of data included in MPG files, accessing such files can have a significant impact on the judiciary’s network. In addition. security alerts emphasize that sexually-oriented websites are very likely to contain computer viruses, trojan horses, and other harmful products. … Rest of Article

Things I Love About Japan

ÊItÕs rumored Boonga Boonga got its name from an old joke, in which two intrepid jungle explorers are captured by natives. TheyÕre brought before the chief of the tribe, who offers them a simple choice. They can be sentenced to death, or subjected to the ancient ritual of Boonga Boonga. Explorer #1 decides just about anything would be preferable than death, so he chooses Boonga Boonga.
ÊÊÊThe chief nods. He claps his hands, and gathers together one hundred men from the village: Boonga Boonga!

ÊÊÊThe men form a line stretching back as far as the eye can see. Each takes a turn fucking Explorer #1 in the ass, upside-down and backwards. Any conceivable way an intrepid explorer can get fucked in the ass is how he gets fucked in the ass.

ÊÊÊExplorer #2 witness this ritual. Of course it takes him less than a second to determine heÕd rather be put to death.

ÊÊÊThe chief solemnly accepts this decision. He claps his hands and again rallies the troops, this time with the following pronouncement:

ÊÊÊÒDeath by Boonga Boonga!Ó

High-tech surveillance … the kind used to catch terrorists will be spying on shoppers
By Jenifer JohnstonÊ
IT’S supposed to be the sedate home of book lovers, coffee drinkers and the chattering classes, but Borders, the high street bookseller, has been attacked by human rights organisations for using high-tech surveillance equipment to spy on their customers.

The company is to become the first retailer in the world to introduce a controversial security scheme, normally used to trap football hooligans, paedophiles and terrorists, to photograph customers as they enter stores.

SmartFace — known as FaceIt in the USA — keeps a database of ‘unique digital face-maps’ that will check customers’ pictures against those of known shoplifters. … Rest of Article

Code Red will be around ‘forever’, warns the security expert who has detected a new variation of the Code Red II worm

A new permutation of the Code Red II worm was discovered on Friday, and experts say that Code Red is now unlikely ever to disappear.

The new variant has been dubbed CodeRed.d, and exploits the same Index Server flaw in Microsoft’s Internet Information Server (IIS) software as the initial Code Red. According to Roger Thompson, technical director of malicious code research at anti-virus firm TruSecure, who detected the variant, the appearance of a new worm indicates that we are stuck with the Code Red problem “forever”.

U.S. Refuses to Disclose PC Tracking

Saturday, August 25th, 2001

Invoking a national security law normally used in highly publicized espionage cases, the Justice Department told a federal judge on Thursday that it would not publicly reveal the details of the “key logger” system used to gather evidence in the gambling and loansharking trial of Nicodemo S. Scarfo Jr.

The technology behind the key logger, which was developed by the F.B.I. but is similar to readily available commercial products, has become a central issue in the case against Mr. Scarfo. But, privacy experts say, the technology is also a new disturbance to the delicate balance between the privacy rights of citizens and the growing power of technology to help government invade privacy.

In the Scarfo case, F.B.I. agents installed the monitoring technology, which records keystrokes, on Mr. Scarfo’s personal computer under a court-authorized search warrant. Mr. Scarfo’s lawyers have argued that the technology resembles a wiretap, and that using the logger without going through the relatively stringent requirements of a full wiretap order may have violated Mr. Scarfo’s constitutional rights. But they say that they cannot know for sure unless they know how the logger works.
